One Week Later
1:35 pm: Well...this time last week I was having unbearable contractions and waiting impatiently for an epidural. One week later, I'm feeling much better, loving life with 2 little girls. Well, not loving life ALL the time. Some of my parts still hurt and I'm pretty tired, but so far the transition from one to two has gone much better than I expected. I'm not sure if it's because Reese is such a good baby (so far) or if we're all a little bit more relaxed about things. Probably a combination of both. I think for us, the transition from 0 to 1 child was much harder than going from 1 to 2.
On Thursday, we had to brave the coldest day of the year and take Reese to the doctor for her one week check. And she checked out great. She was already back to her birth weight (6lbs, 12 oz) and looked nice and pink - just some very faint signs of jaundice but nothing to worry about. Dr. L. even gave us a little outfit for Reese - so nice! We will take her back in a couple more weeks for another checkup.
At one week, this is what we know about Reese:
She falls asleep almost instantly when we go in the bathroom and turn on the space heater and the exhaust fan. This is particularly useful at 4am.
She likes sucking on pinky fingers. Can't quite get the hang of a pacifier without a lot of assistance.
She likes to be swaddled (oh no, not another one - maybe she'll break herself of the habit before 9 months though...)
She rarely spits up! (Ava spit up until she was almost a year old)
She has the makings of long, dark eyelashes like her big sister (lucky girls!)
And I'm HOPING this one sticks...the last 2 nights she has slept 4 hour stretches with just one wake up at about 3:30am. Bliss.
And to be fair, here are some Ava tidbits (3 yrs, 2 mo):
She has been writing her name for a few months
She can recognize all capital letters
She's very good at putting together 24 piece puzzles
She likes coloring and will attempt to stay around the lines
She is obsessed with princesses
Ava has adjusted to her big sister role quite well - she really likes "helping" and doing things with her little baby Reese. She asks to hold her all the time - she cradles her arms really well and sits still...but is usually ready to hand her back within about 30 seconds and move on to something else. She likes to talk about when she was a baby. The standard template goes something like this, "When I was a baby, [insert activity], when I was a baby. Examples:
"When I was a baby, I was in your tummy, when I was a baby."
"When I was a baby, I played with that toy, when I was a baby."
"When I was a baby, I wore diapers, when I was a baby."
Oh, and I guess it's time to change the name of my blog. I'll have to think about that a little more...

It's a girl!

I felt my first contraction at 9:30 am Saturday morning and they occurred about every 20 minutes after that. We called the hospital around 11:30 and they said we could go ahead and come in since I had already been dilated to 3-4cm at my appt last Monday. We got to the hospital around 12:30 and by the time I got in a room, they were coming every 5 minutes. Got the epidural around 2:45 and was loving life after that. (I had a lot of anxiety about getting the epidural, because with Ava they had to stick me 3 times and it was pretty much the worst part about the whole experience - I couldn't believe how much better it went this time!) Anyway, labor stalled a little - I was still dilating further but not contracting as much, so the nurse broke my water around 5 pm and my doctor was on her way. That got things moving along really quickly - I pushed for about 45 minutes and little baby girl arrived at 6:25 pm! Didn't really feel a thing. I'm not sure how it could have gone any better, quite honestly - it was really a great labor and delivery. Baby remained nameless until the next day - we had tossed around Reese in the last couple weeks and it ended up sticking. We were so prepared with a boy name that we were just kind of having a wait and see attitude to see if we really needed a girl name ;-) And we did! I'm really excited to have 2 girls - I honestly didn't care one way or another and now it just seems to be perfect to have a second little girl. She is a spitting image of Ava. Ava is doing well so far - she's pretty fired up about being a big sister. Though she refers to Reese as "he" a lot of the time and likes the name Lauren better (a new baby started at daycare last week named Lauren). But she has been very loving towards her little sister and we hope it continues! Scot will be home with us until the middle of next week and I will be home until April 6th. Yay!
By the way, the pool results are on the link at the left - congrats to my friend Avinity (who I know from a parenting website) for having the closest guess!

Enough already
Hey Baby! Come out!
I just had my 39 week appt this afternoon and I really hope it's the last! I'm dilated to 3-4 cm already...poor baby, it's like I'm literally smushing it's head every time I sit down! Otherwise no contractions and no other signs of impending labor - boo. My doctor stripped my membranes again for good measure, but I suspect I'll just feel crampy tonight and then nothing else will happen. Oh well...I guess it will come when it's ready. I was really hoping this one would be a LITTLE early though! Apparently I just have a comfy tummy.
So, I made another appt for the 12th - my due date. Dr. L. said we could induce on the 16th if I go that long - cripes, I'm already halfway there. I was induced with Ava too (she was 3 days late and when we went in for the biophysical profile, they kept me as she wasn't moving enough). I was already dilated to 2 or 3 then too, so I had a really good experience and am definitely open to going that route again.
In other news, we took Ava bowling for the first time yesterday! (Gee, you'd think that would have induced labor, but no!). We had a really fun time - we cheated a little and helped push the ball down the alley on most of her turns, but she didn't care. Her favorite part might have been the hand drier. (And yes, Scot got her dressed - not me)
And I never posted our sledding pictures from Christmas Day - Ava and Scot both had a ton of fun (while I watched).
